All goes well initially. Renting an apartment in Metta, a rundown Khmer Rouge-era housing complex, her visit to her maternal relatives finds her welcomed with open arms. But Soriya’s waking hours in the apartment and its surroundings are punctuated by terrifying, bloody visions, almost as though she were a conduit for horrors of the past wanting to seep into the present. Inrasothythep Neth and Sokyou Chea’s blood-chilling psychological horror explores a personal and political past through the present, transforming a characterful space into an insidious environment. Surrounded by modern high-rises, this decrepit structure, with its brutalist architecture and peeling surfaces, is a relic from a dark period in history whose painful memories it has absorbed. In tracing Soriya’s ominous journey back to her roots, Tenement hints at a necessary reckoning with Cambodia’s political past without overplaying its historical dimension. It’s an impressive work from a woefully underrepresented national cinema.

ラス・タンブリン,睦五郎,佐原健二,水野久美「フランケンシュタイン対地底怪獣」の姉妹編。クローン生物のフランケンシュタインが、より怪獣的になり、分裂によって山の怪獣サンダと海の怪獣ガイラの2体に分かれる。心優しい兄のサンダと人間を食う凶暴な弟のガイラが、骨肉相食む死闘を演じる。2匹の死闘は都市を中心に展開され、従来脇役に徹してきた自衛隊が、今回は生命の細胞までも焼きつくす殺人光線兵器・メーサー光線砲戦車を登場させ、互角の闘いを演じる。この日・米合作によるフランケンシュタイン2部作は、当時の怪獣ブームから、人間不在の怪獣トーナメント化した怪獣映画に一石を投じたが、本流にはならなかった。
